Diploma course- Sept 2010

Running: From Sept 2010 for 3 years, one Sunday per month, 10.00am – 5 pm and one residential weekend per year (in the Mandala Yoga Ashram in Wales)

Venue: derekthedog studios, Queens Walk, central Exeter.

Syllabus: The course is made up of 4 Units:

  • Unit 1 teaches anatomy with an emphasis on the muscular system.  Students learn how to analyse classical yoga asanas anatomically and learn how to prepare for them. Lesson planning will be taught and practiced.
  • Unit 2 deals with prana and the energy body. We learn pranayama, mudras and bandhas and study to Hatha Yoga Pradipika in detail.
  • The main topic of Unit 3 is mind, meditation and philosophy. The BhagavadGita, the Upanishads and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are studied. Students will also learn how to integrate the philosophy into their class teaching.
  • Unit 4 puts it all together, refined lesson planning will be taught with emphasis on how to teach safely.

Cost: The course cost is £2550 (tuition fee, room rent and course material). This is to be paid in 5 instalments:

  • £300 deposit, to be paid when applying for the course (this is part of the Unit 4 fee)
  • £700 Unit 1 fee, to be paid at the first meeting of unit 1
  • £700 Unit 2 fee, to be paid at the first meeting of Unit 2
  • £700 Unit 3 fee, to be paid at the first meeting of Unit 3
  • £150 rest of the Unit 4 fee, to be paid at the first meeting of Unit 4

Extra costs: £60 course registration, £60 verification fee, 2 times £50 for 2 recorded teaching practices plus travel, £75, final class assessment course books, food and accommodation for the residential weekends

From the second Unit you are expected to teach and to have an income from your teaching.

Terms and conditions:

  • You need to have been taught Yoga for at least 2 years, and have possibly attended a BWY foundation course. Students without a foundation course are welcome on the diploma course.
  • Membership with the BWY is obligatory.
  • A regular attendance of weekly Yoga classes, lead by any BWY teacher (or someone from an accredited group), is necessary parallel to the diploma course. You should have established the habit of daily Yoga practice at home for quite some time.

The first step is an  interview with the Diploma Course Tutor (DCT). For this interview you have to bring a piece of written work (1 or 2 pages) about any Yoga subject you are interested in (to check your ability of producing written work). You also have to demonstrate 10 -20 min uninterrupted Yoga practice.

You will be asked about your Yoga activities and interest and be informed about the syllabus and content of the course. There will be plenty of time for answering questions.

The next step is to apply for the course, by sending in a completed application form (you receive the form at the interview).

To reserve your space on the course you have to pay a non refundable deposit of £300, which is  part of the fee for the Unit 4.

At the first meeting of  Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3 the fee of each £700 is due, £150 for Unit 4.

To receive you diploma at the end of the course you have to:

  • attend at least 80% of the course meetings.
  • produce essays (average length:3-10 pages) on the taught Yoga topic, in average 5 per unit.
  • take one or two short presentations per Unit
  • undergo 3 recorded teaching practices
